Creating Cost Effective Custom Parts

How Do I Order Custom Machined Parts?

When ordering a custom part, you want to make sure you’re getting what you need, but you also want to make sure you’re not spending more then you need to. The best way to ensure you’re not overspending on your custom design is a well thought out plan.

Start by knowing your needs. What is it that this part needs to accomplish? Are you replacing a broken part? If so, what went wrong and how can it be improved? Are you designing a completely new part? What is its purpose, and what are you goals for adding this to your machinery?

There are lots of items to consider when creating your design, which means there are lots of opportunities for cost savings. The most important thing to remember when creating your cost effective custom part is to be specific where you need to be, but recognize where you don’t.

There is an array of options available to you when it comes to your design, material, grade and finish. Does your item require a high-grade stainless steel, or could a less expensive grade perform the task just as well? If you need the higher grade, be sure to outline this in your plan so you won’t incur more expense if the part fails, but if it’s not a requirement, let the machinist provide you with the less expensive option. Same goes for finish, tolerances and thread call-outs, if you don’t require a part to be ground, turned or milled, don’t ask for it in your plan. But remember, just as important as not specifying details that aren’t required, be sure to outline what you do need. For example, most parts will come buffed and smoothed for nicer appearance and easy handling. If your part requires a sharp edge, be sure to ask for what you need in advance.
